Inspired deeply by the human sense of touch, Marita Moreno’s SS21 collection places particular emphasis on textures found in nature, with the goal of using more durable and sustainable materials. From touch our mind creates stories that can transport us in time through a prism of nostalgia. But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt from 2020, it’s that the world is extremely fragile and unpredictable. No longer could we run our fingers over the transparent skin of a new-born baby, relish in the comfort of a warm hug from our grandparents or feel the warm grainy sand beneath our feet at the beach. In just a few months, our humanity, our kindness and our feeling were stripped away, forcing us to find strength, comfort and refuge within ourselves.
The collection brings these small, but meaningful comforts back to the individual in a way that aims to stimulate memories, creativity and comfort. Each piece and fabrication draw inspiration and influence from a piece of the Moreno’s memory. Cork and pinatex resemblant of old coats and textured malai of fresh tree bark. A buttery soft, vegan leather symbolic of the memory of Mexico’s cactus, and a special straw application in the limited line of hand-crafted chairs, a reminder of old houses. Moreno transports the wearer to the seaside, stimulating memories of holidays through the cotton mesh and textured cork particles in the bags, backpacks and shoes. Formulated from the stems of banana trees and as strong as grandmother’s old linen sheets, walking in, and carrying them will be a reminder of an endless summer.
A Portuguese bio-leather for shoes is also used, void of heavy metals and natural enough to be used as a fertilizer. Comfortable, practical and without costing the earth, walking in them will be like a hug to your feet.
